Django Django - Born Under Saturn

Experimental Indie Pop

It's not an insult to compare Django Django to Status Quo, The Beach Boys and some unsigned, half forgotten band that featured on one of Tarantino's less popular movies. With their sound firmly rooted in 60s / 70s psych pop, Django Django's eponymous release in 2012 was largely only appreciated by music mags NME and Rolling Stone. Drawing comparisons to more contemporary bands like Animal Collective, Alt-J, Jagwar Ma, The Crystal Fighters, Hot Chip, Tame Impala, Cut Copy and MGMT was maybe only inevitable, but not entirely fair. Django Django weave an insanely catchy mix of surf guitars, tribal beats and wowing synths to make for a sound that is not truly comparable to anyone but themselves. With 'Born Under Saturn', the band seems intent on sharing their weirdo party vibes with as many people as are down for a gig on the strange side of town.

Casually - nay - suavely sidestepping the curse of  the second album, Dave, Jimmy, Vince and Tommy prove that not only do they have staying power, but they can remain in the industry without really breaking a sweat. The most surprising element on this album may be the piano that appears on track 5 ('Pause Repeat') sticking around for a bit of early nineties riffing on 'Reflections'. On the same track a saxophone solo, layered and rather hazy, comes out of nowhere to add to the oddity. It's a space trip Major Tom himself would be proud of.
A trip hop beat and jungle ambiance introduces 'Vibrations', bringing us back to earth but in an altogether unfamiliar area still.
Even when the sun clouds over for brief moments on 'Shot Down' and 'High Moon', Django Django surf the minor chords to silver moonlit shores and never once lose their footing. This is a band with a specific sound that somehow never gets monotonous. 'Beginning To Fade', with its dreamy 3/4 time signature, sounds as though it were snatched straight off the main-stage at Woodstock.

'Born Under Saturn' is the quintessential summer release just as Django Django is the quintessential summer band. They simply are the new Beach Boys. And they simply are themselves. Incomparable and genius. They deserve acclaim for this one.
