Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways

In the trend of presumed defunct 90s rock hero bands making a comeback, Foo Fighters are back despite "splitting" after their last studio album. 'Sonic Highways' is a project made in parntership with HBO where the band recorded each of the eight tracks in a different city of the States. The number eight here reflects the cities, the songs, the eighth studio album and (on it's side) infinity. See what they're doing? Deep o.O

Whilst hardcore fans of the band have already deemed (for the most part) that this album is mediocre at best, there is, in actual fact, a lot of depth and meaning to the tracks here. Grohl positively preaches on the aptly titled 'Congregation', following up the themes of God and eternity (infinity) on the next track 'What Did I Do / God As My Witness'. It's an incredibly refreshing subject to be grappling with, considering that most bands daintily skirt around anything to do with belief or faith.

I suspect this is an album to hear live. The energy, the neverending riffs, Grohls growls and screams, the little instrumental break on 'Outside' (something along the lines of 'Don't Fear The Reaper'?), all lend themselves imploringly to be heard live. There is a fresh energy about this album. We all know they can do very beautiful ballads, (and there is one - 'Subterranean') but here they are showcasing their stamina and aggression. Contributing to the legacy left them by great American rock groups Free, The Allman Brothers, Creedence Clearwater and Bad Company, Foo Fighters have delievered a great American rock album with an updated sound. There is still enough of a reference to the sounds and cities and the decade that inspired this album for it to be an homage. When closing track 'I Am A River' kicks into it's lighters-aloft chorus, you realize that the album was, infact, more of an experience and less of just forty-two minutes of background music. Again I reckon I'd rather hear and see it live. I rate the audio experience conservatively, holding out for the show.
