Roo Panes - Little Giant

Tiger Rating: 9.0 / 10
Indie Folk / Singer/Songwriter

I liked Roo Panes before he was famous. That's fact. Because he hasn't yet achieved household name status, and the 125 of us who constantly retweet him and heart his IG pics kind of hope he never will. However Panes' talent is such that it would be criminal to keep him a secret. And with the release of his first LP, it's only a matter of time now before little kids in Scandinavia will be singing along to his songs at main stage shows.

So, before we carry on, you'll need to be introduced. Meet Roo. Click here and fall in love. Go ahead. I'll wait.
May we proceed?
OK so yes - in the post Mumford waves, the world is quite sick of the guy-who-can-play-a-guitar-and-write-sentimental-songs-with-a-bluegrass-feel, and really, who can blame them. Roo may be in danger of riding a wave that is fast ebbing, HOWEVER he does it (rides that wave) so effortlessly and soulfully and so full of conviction that, if those are the only characteristics you take away from his music, then you have won a unique prize.
His mahogany voice is your guide on a hazy, lavender tinted adventure down along the South coast of England. Some boyish manner is retained in Roo's soul as he play fights imaginary monsters with a wooden sword, gazes wide eyed at the clouds for hours on end and beats grass with a stick, making new trails for him and his friends to wander down. For reference to all these sentiments listen to the title track off 'Little Giant'.
"Have the heart of a giant / but know you're a man / start small / grow tall" he advises, now a sage instructing a new class of young adventurers at the end of his song.

And this is the journey Roo Panes takes you on. A sentimental, coming of age one, experienced outdoors among the trees and under the moon and never far from the ocean. His is a soundtrack to an epic adventure. Not only an adventure taken in steps, but one experienced over the course of many years. You play 'Deeper Than Shallow' and suddenly this fresh faced twenty-something year old is ninety, sitting on his porch looking out at the silver sea of memories he has traversed in his life. This ability he has of being simultaneously ancient and wise and green and adventurous is frankly astonishing. It something probably not been seen since or heard since Simon & Garfunkel teamed up and unleashed their fresh, fast flowing wisdom and wit on the world. Roo doesn't need a partner to convey all that he has to say, though. He's a one man ocean.

'Little Giant' is itself a journey. It's one for a dark day of rain clouds and wind. It's one for early morning sunshine filtered through fresh spring leaves. It's for the grassy pathways and sandy beaches.
"Life is a journey of a lifetime", he sings. "And where you finish isn't where you start."
So go. Listen and leave the confines of your imagination and sail the waves Roo navigates. And may it be a journey that lasts a lifetime.
