Best Coast - Fade Away EP

Release Date: 22 October
Label: Mexican Summer
Rating: 9.0 out of 10
A SEVEN track EP. Man you gotta love these guys. This is exactly the reason they're they coolest band around. After not such a strong second album (growing up is overrated - they shouldn't have tried it), Beth and Bobb are back, assuring us "I won't change, I won't change!". Good. We're glad to hear it.

Seven tracks aside, this is one hell of an EP. They have succeed in not changing their sound much at all, but the introduction of some truly savage drums and in places true metal guitars adds the perfect amount of urgency and aggression. They're not so sunshine soaked and laid back here. They've risen from their deck chair, put their doobie down and have something to say. It's the same stuff they always say, but it sounds like they finally believe it's worth saying. They finally know they have something exceptional to offer. 'Baby I'm Crying' tempers the new found aggression and energy with more of that dreamy sloth-like langour they were known for. Current single and closer 'I Don't Know How', far from being uncertain, is a strong, slightly country tinged number where every note sung is measured, every drumbeat is tight and every strum of the guitar is strong and thought out. It kicks into a an irresistible repetitive 3 chord chorus.

This may be some of the strongest work they've produced. The only thing missing from it all is more downbeat numbers and we would have had a whole album here. But I think this was just to showcase a new energy and to prove to us that they might be West Coast lay abouts, but the West Coast is the Best Coast and they're not done having fun just yet.
